OMTech Laser Applications

OMTech Laser Applications

Discover what you can create, cut, engrave, mark, and weld with OMTech laser machines. Real projects, real materials, real results.

Applications by Material

Each material behaves differently under a laser. Here's what you can achieve with the right OMTech machine and settings.

Wood Laser Engraving
Wood

CO2 lasers engrave detailed images at resolutions up to 500 DPI on hardwoods, plywood, MDF, and bamboo. A 60W laser cuts 6mm birch plywood at approximately 10-15mm/s; a 100W unit handles up to 12-15mm in a single pass. Resinous woods like pine produce more smoke and require lower speeds to avoid charring. Note: laser-cut wood edges will show a brown char line that may need light sanding for food-contact applications.

Recommended: CO2 Laser 40W-100W

Acrylic Laser Cutting
Acrylic & Plastics

Cast acrylic produces flame-polished edges when CO2 laser cut, requiring no additional finishing. A 60W laser cuts 6mm cast acrylic at 8-12mm/s; a 130W unit handles up to 20mm. Extruded acrylic is cheaper but produces frosted edges instead of polished ones. Important: never laser PVC, vinyl, or polycarbonate, as they release toxic gases and damage the machine.

Recommended: CO2 Laser 60W-150W

Metal Laser Marking
Metals

Fiber lasers (1064nm, Raycus/JPT source) permanently mark metals with marks that withstand heat, chemicals, and abrasion. A 30W fiber marks at up to 7,000mm/s for barcodes and serial numbers. MOPA fiber lasers (adjustable pulse width 2-350ns) produce full-color marks on 304/316 stainless steel by precisely controlling the oxide layer thickness. Limitation: marking depth is typically 0.1-0.5mm; deep engraving above 1mm requires higher power (50W+) and significantly more time per part.

Stainless Steel Aluminum Titanium Copper Brass

Recommended: Fiber Laser 20W-100W

Leather Laser Engraving
Leather

Create personalized leather goods with intricate patterns and text. CO2 lasers cut and engrave genuine leather, faux leather, and suede with clean edges and no fraying.

Recommended: CO2 Laser 40W-60W

Glass & Stone Laser Engraving
Glass & Stone

CO2 lasers create a frosted etching effect on glass surfaces. Engrave wine glasses, mirrors, tiles, slate, and marble for awards, gifts, and memorial plaques.

Recommended: CO2 Laser 40W-80W

Fabric & Paper Laser Cutting
Fabric & Paper

Cut intricate patterns in fabric without fraying edges. Produce wedding invitations, paper art, architectural models, and textile prototypes with clean, sealed cuts.
